This case study covers a water filter in Fernvale for a home that draws its household water from the river.

Location: Fernvale, Somerset
Service: Water filtration and drainage
Date: December 2025
Turnaround: Completed in one visit
The problem
A Fernvale property draws its household water from the river. Sediment was getting into the home’s water lines, and the homeowners had also noticed a blocked downpipe running to their water tank and a toilet smell.
What we did
- Installed a backwashing water filter on the river water supply to stop sediment getting into the house
- Cleared the blocked downpipe with a jet blaster and checked it with a CCTV camera
- Replaced the toilet suite in the powder room
Why a backwashing filter?
River and dam water can carry a lot of sediment. A standard cartridge filter can clog quickly, while a backwashing filter flushes the trapped sediment out to waste so it keeps working. It protects taps, valves and appliances throughout the house.
The result
The house now has filtered water at every tap, the downpipe to the tank is flowing, and the smell has been dealt with.
Looking after a water filter in Fernvale
River and tank water changes with the seasons, so filters need regular care. For example, after heavy rain, sediment levels can rise quickly. A backwashing filter cleans itself, which means less maintenance and steadier water pressure.
In addition, a water test helps you choose the right treatment for drinking water. The Queensland Government health website has advice on rainwater and private water supplies. See our tank, bore and river water page for more.
