This running toilet repair in Riverhills started with a toilet that wouldn’t stop filling and ended with new hot water valves too.

Location: Riverhills, Brisbane
Service: General plumbing (toilet repair and hot water valve replacement)
Date: June 2026
Pricing: Fixed-price options, approved before work started
The problem
A Riverhills homeowner called us about a toilet that kept running after every flush. It’s one of the most common jobs we see, and one that quietly wastes water around the clock if it’s left alone.
What we found
Our plumber checked the cistern and found the inlet valve and the dual flush valve had both worn out, so the cistern was constantly topping itself up. The mini stop valve that supplies the toilet was also old and wasn’t a reliable way to shut off the water in an emergency.
Fixed-price options, explained on site
Before touching anything, our plumber walked the homeowner through what he’d found and gave fixed-price options on the spot. No hourly rate and no surprises. The homeowner approved the work there and then.
- New cistern inlet valve and dual flush valve installed
- Old mini stop valve replaced with a new chrome mini valve
- Emergency flood guard fitted, which automatically shuts off the water if the hose to the toilet bursts
The toilet was tested, flushing properly and silent before we left.
A second issue, sorted two days later
A couple of days later the homeowner noticed water running from the hot water system‘s pressure relief valve and called us back. Our plumber returned, explained what was happening and again gave fixed-price options.
The homeowner chose a complete valve set for the hot water system:
- Tempering valve, which keeps hot water at bathroom fixtures to a safe maximum of 50°C, as required under Australian plumbing standards
- Pressure limiting valve, which protects the system and the home’s tapware from high mains pressure
- Cold water expansion valve, which takes strain off the main relief valve and helps the system last longer
- A new section of copper pipe and the relief drain redirected to stormwater
All valves were installed, tested and commissioned the next morning.
The result
- A quiet, water-efficient toilet with an emergency shut-off fitted
- A hot water system that’s protected from high pressure and delivers water at a safe temperature
- Every stage quoted at a fixed price and approved by the homeowner before work began
Our advice
A running toilet or a dripping relief valve can seem minor, but both waste water and are often a sign that other parts are wearing out. If your relief valve is running constantly, or your pipes bang when taps are turned off, high water pressure could be the cause. A licensed plumber can test it and recommend the right fix.
Why a running toilet repair in Riverhills was worth doing early
A running toilet can waste a surprising amount of water every day, so it pays to fix it early. As a result, the homeowner saved water and avoided a bigger repair later. For more on common faults, see our toilet repairs page, and Urban Utilities also offers water-saving tips for Brisbane homes.
