Pipe relining in Brisbane is a popular way to fix cracked or root-damaged drains without digging up the whole yard.

Pipe relining Brisbane – The Plumbing Gang

If your drains are cracked, leaking or invaded by roots, you might assume the only fix is to dig up the yard, the driveway or the bathroom floor. Pipe relining offers an alternative that often involves far less digging. Here is how it works and when it makes sense.

What is pipe relining?

Pipe relining, sometimes called trenchless pipe repair, creates a new pipe inside your existing one. Instead of removing the old pipe, a liner is installed inside it and hardened, so the old pipe acts as a host for the new surface.

How it works

  1. CCTV inspection. A camera is run through the drain to find the problem and check the condition of the pipe. This confirms whether relining is suitable.
  2. Cleaning. The pipe is cleared of roots, scale and debris, often using a high-pressure water jet, so the liner can bond properly.
  3. Installing the liner. A flexible liner soaked in resin is fed into the pipe through an existing access point, such as an inspection opening, and positioned over the damaged section.
  4. Curing. The liner is pressed against the pipe wall and the resin is cured so it hardens into a rigid, smooth lining.
  5. CCTV check afterwards. The camera goes back through to confirm the liner is in place and the pipe is clear.

When relining suits

  • The pipe has cracks, leaking joints or minor defects.
  • Tree roots keep entering at joints and you want to seal the entry points.
  • The pipe is under a driveway, patio, garden, tiles or other areas that would be costly or disruptive to dig up.
  • The pipe is still reasonably intact and in line, so the liner has a stable pipe to bond to.

Because it needs only minimal digging, relining can mean less mess and less disturbance to your property.

When excavation is better

Relining is not right for every drain. Your plumber may recommend excavation and replacement if:

  • The pipe has collapsed or has a severe offset or dislocated joint that the liner cannot pass.
  • The pipe has sagged, forming a low spot that holds water, which relining will not fix.
  • The pipe is too badly deteriorated to support a liner.
  • Changes to the pipe layout or size are needed.

This is why the camera inspection matters. It shows what is going on, so the recommendation is based on what is actually inside your pipe.

Questions to ask

  1. What did the camera show, and can I see the footage?
  2. Why is relining or excavation the right option for this pipe?
  3. Will a camera check be done after the work is completed?
  4. Is the quote fixed before work starts?

Leave it to the licensed professionals

Relining and sewer repairs involve specialised equipment, sewage and compliance requirements. They are not a DIY job and should be carried out by a licensed plumber. If you are dealing with recurring blockages, you may also want to read about tree roots in sewer pipes.

Is pipe relining in Brisbane right for your home?

Pipe relining suits many Brisbane homes with clay or older PVC pipes. However, a collapsed pipe may still need digging. That’s why we inspect with a camera first. Read about our pipe relining service, and check a drainer’s licence on the QBCC website.
